2019 will be the last year your air conditioning unit can cool your home using R22 refrigerant, and the professionals at Comfort Specialists are here to tell you why:
What is R22 Refrigerant?
Simply put, R22 refrigerant, or more technically known as HCFC-22, is a substance that was introduced in the 1950s as an innovative cooling solution. R22 is also commonly known as Freon and is used in refrigerators, HVAC systems, and in vehicles to help the air conditioner perform its primary function: cooling down air.
The difference between the air blowing out of a conventional fan and an air conditioning system is the refrigerant used in the latter. When your home or vehicle’s air conditioner circulates air, that cool air sensation you feel is due to the coolant.
Why is R22 Being Discontinued?
It was discovered in the 1970s that the industry standard refrigerant, R22, or Freon, and certain other refrigerants were actually depleting the Earth’s ozone layer and contributing to global warming. With efforts to be more environmentally conscious, many industries have already begun to phase out R22. Since this discovery, the EPA, or Environmental Protection Agency, has gradually increased restrictions on the use of R22. According to the EPA, new production and import of HCFC-22 environmentally hazardous substances will be phased out by the year 2020.
Replacement for R22 Refrigerant
There are many alternatives to R22, with the most efficient being R-410A, or Puron. These substitutes are better for the environment and do not contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer. Since 2010, HVAC professionals have been gradually phasing out Freon, and chances are you’ve already switched to environmentally-friendly refrigerants. However, if you still have a Freon-based HVAC unit, while it may not contain the hazardous R22 refrigerant, your unit will not perform as efficiently with alternatives. It’s best not to wait to make the transition and risk an AC breakdown and astronomical energy bills.
